Maligne Lake, in Jasper National Park, is the largest natural lake in the Canadian Rockies. It is famous for its azure-blue water, mountain peaks surrounding the lake, and a magical island, Spirit Island. Spirit Island is a spiritual place for the First Nation. The best way to get to the island is on the commercial cruise line operating in the lake. Technically, you could pedal your way from the shore to the island, but that’s a long pedalling. You are not allowed to operate your own motorized boats in the lake.
On your way to Maligne Lake, you will probably first see Medicine Lake. You will notice that trees on one side of the lake was burnt. The fire happened on 2015 and 6 years later, when we visited the lake, the new growth has still not covered the area. You can see the burnt trees in one of the photo’s.
